Saw is a 2004 horror movie directed by James Wan and written by Leigh Whannell. It stars Cary Elwes, Leigh Whannell, and Danny Glover. Saw is about two men locked in a bathroom who have no idea who the other one is, and why or how they got there. This movie is a pop culture phenomenon that started the horror subgenre of torture porn, or at least the sequels did. This movie is pretty great, especially since it was made on a ham sandwich budget. This movie isn't as gory as everyone makes it out to be. It's got it's 'close your eyes' moments, but about 80 percent of the extreme graphic violence is off screen, at least partially. This movie has become a classic that was ruined with a swarm of sequels. This movie is beautifully directed except for all the weird jump cuts they use, but I understand that their budget was built on twine and they didn't have the money for better effects. It's just kind of annoying sometimes. Most of the movie is like How I Met Your Mother, meaning it's told majorly through flashbacks, which is fine. It's just something you might want to know going in. The movie is very fun to try and piece everything together, because the ending has like 6 or 7 twists, and they aren't as obvious as you may think. The traps, which the Saw franchise is mostly known for, are intense and gross, but there aren't very many in this one. This one is focused on story, not gore. The bathroom where most of the film is shot looks nice but doesn't feel as claustrophobic as you may think. Anything with Gordon's family is really intense, and sometimes just messed up. The acting, except for Leigh Whannell's, is pretty good. Leigh Whannell's acting isn't very good because he isn't an actor, he's a screenwriter, but once again, they didn't have the budget for more professional actors. In the end, Saw is a great gorno with intense and disturbing moments and imagery, clever twists, great cinematography, a pretty good soundtrack, some weird editing and Whannell's acting is cringe worthy at times, but it was all due to budget constraints, not them being lazy. Saw is a movie I'll never forget and I'll definitely watch it again and again. If you have a strong stomach, want a movie with a lot of twists and turns, or just want to see what all the hype is about and can get past some uncomfortable acting, than Saw just may be the movie for you!

SCORE: 8.8/10
