Hey everyone! Sorry there were no reviews for the past few days. I didn't have time to write anything but today I've got a special treat for you! Tonight, you'll be getting two reviews. But right now, let's take a look at Mimic! Mimic is a 1997 horror thriller directed by Guillermo del Toro and written by Matthew Robbins. It stars Mira Sorvino, Jeremy Northam and Alexander Goodwin. It is about a scientist who created these creatures to kill cockroaches and now the creatures are trying to kill people for some reason. Now, on paper, that sounds like a fun monster movie. I mean, it's directed by Guillermo del Toro. Director of such films like Hellboy and Pan's Labyrinth. Now, I don't hate this movie. I just don't think this short story's translation to screen was a very good idea. Some things I do love about this movie and lets talk about that first. The effects and creature design is magnificent. Huge props to Colin Penman on that one. I love Penman's work in all sorts of flicks. He really knows what he's doing. Another thing with this movie is it is shot almost flawlessly. The cinematography is just beautiful and stunning to look at, as with most of del Toro's films. I really admire the acting as well, so I was naturally sad to see that none of the actors really went anywhere. Most of the movie took place in a subway so I like that claustrophobic feel it has to it. Now for the bad stuff. The story lags constantly, I can't tell you any of the character's names, it's not very memroable and I'm about to use a word I hate to describe this film and that word is, boring. A movie about giant killer cockroaches should not be boring. However, I will say one thing. In this movie, when shit goes down, shit goes down! There are some intense and suspensful moments in this thing. Although, they might have been more intense if I cared about any of the characters! But I didn't! I didn't get to really meet the characters and I didn't care that much when they died, and when you don't care when main characters are dying, the movie is probably not doing a very good job! But, if you're looking for a movie that looks flawless, has great acting, decent writing, cardboard cut out characters, a want to be Jeff Goldblum, countless boring moments, sound effects put in the wrong places and practically nothing memorable, then Mimic just may be the film for you!
Score: 4/10
